Baccarossa 2015 Poggio Volpi Lazio
Baccarossa is made from a local Lazio grape known as Nero Buono, a indigenous grape variety that is valued for its colour and the bold flavours it brings to its wines This wine reminds us of a first-class Amarone della Valpolicella, but with a touch more silkiness and elegance as it benefits from a balancing acidity that makes it very approachable and gives the wine a certain freshness.
Baccarossa is an intense, dense but silky full flavoured red wine- with an intense bouquet of sweet succulent red fruit – black berries & ripe plums. To taste- a full flavoured intensity with rich layered red fruits as of the aroma but with notes of liquorice, chocolate and coffee, indicating the use of some expensive oak. The texture is soft, velvety and enveloping with its ripeness softening to a layered finish reminiscent of the best vanilla, delicate dark chocolate and tobacco notes make this wine all about quality and finesse.
Located in the Lazio, Poggio le Volpi is the brainchild of winemaker, Felice Mergè whose family began farming in the area in the 1920s and who decided to set about making top-quality wines in a region which is perhaps not famous for its wines but which Felice is putting on the map thanks to his very distinctive wines. The estate covers some 100 hectares in total with vineyards planted on the slopes of Monte Porzio Catone and the countryside that surrounds the city of Rome.
